The Best Amtrak Routes Reward You for Ignoring the Timetable

In June 2026, Amtrak’s Floridian arrived on time 5.4 percent of the time. The federal minimum standard is 80 percent. If you’re shopping the best Amtrak routes for scenery, that number matters more than any photograph you’ve seen, because it decides whether you’re taking a train trip or missing a wedding.

So here’s the honest framework: some routes are worth booking only when the schedule is irrelevant to you, and others are reliable enough to build a day around. Sorting them that way is more useful than another ranked list of pretty windows.

Amtrak Doesn’t Own the Tracks It Runs On

This is the mechanism behind almost every delay, and knowing it changes how you plan.

Outside the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak runs on tracks owned by freight railroads: CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, BNSF, and others. Those companies dispatch the trains. Federal law gives passenger trains preference, but in practice a loaded coal train sitting on a single-track siding doesn’t move for you.

The Floridian crosses four host railroads between Chicago and Miami. In June 2026, its late passengers averaged 158 minutes of delay, and the trailing twelve-month average sat at 105 minutes. Amtrak publishes these figures monthly in its Host Railroad Reports, and federal transportation data is available through the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Read that before you book, not after.

The Lounge Car Question Nobody Answers

Here’s a mismatch that ruins eastern trips specifically, and it’s about equipment rather than route.

Western long-distance trains use bilevel Superliner cars, which include a Sightseer Lounge: an upper deck with floor-to-ceiling windows that curve into the roof. It’s the single best feature Amtrak offers, and it’s why the western routes photograph the way they do.

Eastern long-distance trains mostly use single-level Viewliner and Amfleet equipment. You get a café car with normal windows. Perfectly fine, not remotely the same thing.

So if you’re searching east coast Amtrak options expecting panoramic glass, adjust your expectations now. The scenery on the Adirondack along Lake Champlain is excellent. You’ll be viewing it through a standard coach window.

Best Amtrak Routes When the Clock Doesn’t Matter

These are the ones where the train is the destination. Book them with nothing scheduled on either end.

Coast Starlight, Seattle to Los Angeles, 35 hours. My pick of the whole network. You get the Cascade Range, Mount Shasta, and a long stretch of California coastline near Vandenberg that’s inaccessible by road. Sit on the west side south of San Luis Obispo.

Empire Builder, Chicago to Seattle or Portland, roughly 46 hours. It runs along the southern boundary of Glacier National Park through Marias Pass, with stops at East Glacier Park and West Glacier. Park details are at the NPS Glacier site. This is the only Amtrak route that drops you at a national park gate.

California Zephyr, Chicago to Emeryville, about 51 hours. Through the Rocky Mountains west of Denver, then Glenwood Canyon and the Colorado River, then the Sierra Nevada over Donner Pass. Most people call it the most scenic in the country. I’d rank it second to the Starlight, narrowly, because the Zephyr does a lot of its Nevada mileage in the dark.

Southwest Chief, Chicago to Los Angeles, around 43 hours. Raton Pass and the high desert of New Mexico, with a stop at Lamy for Santa Fe.

All four carry Sightseer Lounges. All four run late routinely. Neither of those things is a surprise if you’ve read this far.

Short Runs That Beat Their Reputation

Reliability improves sharply on corridor services, and several of them out-scenic the long-distance trains per hour spent aboard.

  • Cascades, Vancouver BC to Eugene via Seattle and Portland, with Puget Sound water views on the northern half
  • Pacific Surfliner, San Diego to San Luis Obispo, which runs literally alongside the beach through much of Orange and Ventura counties
  • Adirondack, New York to Montreal, following the Hudson River then Lake Champlain with the Adirondack Mountains to the west

  • Downeaster, Boston to Brunswick, Maine, coastal New England without an overnight
  • Cardinal, Chicago to New York via the New River Gorge in West Virginia, which is a long-distance train but worth naming here for the gorge alone. Park information at the NPS New River Gorge site

If you have one day and want the highest scenery-to-hours ratio in the network, take the Surfliner between San Diego and Santa Barbara. Nothing else comes close for the time invested.

Three Routes That Didn’t Exist Three Years Ago

Amtrak has added meaningful service since 2024, and two of these open new markets rather than reshuffling old ones.

Borealis

Launched May 2024, Chicago to Saint Paul in about seven and a half hours, once daily over 411 miles. Ridership hit 212,909 in fiscal 2025, up more than 140 percent, which tells you the demand was always there. It’s a coach and business class service with a café, and it’s a far better option than driving I-94.

Mardi Gras Service

This one carries real weight. Passenger rail along the Gulf Coast east of New Orleans died when Hurricane Katrina destroyed the track in 2005. Freight came back. Passengers didn’t, for twenty years.

Service finally returned on August 18, 2025: twice daily between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama, 145 miles in about three hours and forty minutes, with stops at Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula. Ridership was modest in its first year at under 19,000, which is what you’d expect from a corridor rebuilding a habit two decades gone.

Floridian

Launched November 10, 2024, Chicago to Miami via Washington DC and Tampa. Forty-six stops, 2,076 miles, roughly 47 hours, daily.

And it’s temporary. The Floridian exists because Amtrak merged the Capitol Limited and the Silver Star while the East River Tunnel rehabilitation proceeds in New York. When that project finishes, currently projected for 2027, the two separate services are expected to resume. If you’re planning 2027 travel around a one-seat Chicago to Miami ride, check the schedule again closer to the date.

Given the on-time numbers, I wouldn’t book it for anything time-sensitive regardless.

Coach or Roomette, and What That Actually Costs

The sleeper upcharge looks brutal until you account for what it includes.

A roomette on a long-distance train covers two beds, a door, and all meals in the dining car for both passengers. On a two-night trip, that’s six meals plus a place to sleep lying down. Compare it against a coach plus a hotel night plus restaurant food and the gap narrows considerably, though it rarely closes.

scenic train rides

Some practical notes on the sleeper decision:

  • Roomettes are small. Two adults share roughly the footprint of a large closet, and the upper bunk is tight for anyone over six feet.
  • Bathrooms are down the hall in roomettes. Only bedrooms have private facilities.
  • Sleeper fares move like airline pricing. Book early, and the same room can double as departure approaches.
  • Coach seats on Superliners recline far more than airline seats, with legroom that genuinely allows sleep. Plenty of people do two nights in coach without complaint.

Small Things That Improve the Trip

Which side to sit on matters more than people expect, and it changes by route and direction. Coast Starlight southbound, take the west side for the ocean. Empire Builder westbound through Marias Pass, the south side faces the park.

Bring your own water and snacks even in a sleeper, because the café closes and dining car hours are fixed. Bring a power bank; outlets exist but aren’t guaranteed at every seat. And download whatever you plan to watch before you board, since connectivity across Montana and Nevada is nonexistent for hours at a stretch.

One more: the observation lounge fills up on the scenic stretches. Go early or go late, and don’t try to hold seats for four hours, which staff discourage and other passengers resent.

What I’d Tell a First-Timer

Take the Coast Starlight. Book a roomette if the budget allows, go in September when the weather cooperates on both ends, and give yourself a buffer day at the destination.

Don’t take a long-distance train to make a connection, a cruise departure, or a scheduled event. That’s the mistake that turns a good trip into a bad story.

Questions Riders Send Before Booking

What’s the most scenic Amtrak route?

The Coast Starlight between Seattle and Los Angeles, for the Cascade Range, Mount Shasta, and a stretch of California coastline unreachable by road. The California Zephyr runs a close second, with the Rockies and Donner Pass, though it covers much of Nevada after dark.

Are Amtrak trains usually late?

Long-distance routes frequently are. Amtrak runs on freight-owned track outside the Northeast Corridor, and host railroads dispatch the trains. In June 2026, the Floridian posted 5.4 percent on-time performance against a federal standard of 80 percent, with late passengers averaging 158 minutes of delay.

Which Amtrak routes have panoramic lounge cars?

Western long-distance trains using bilevel Superliner equipment, including the Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, California Zephyr, and Southwest Chief. Eastern long-distance trains generally use single-level Viewliner and Amfleet cars with a standard café rather than a Sightseer Lounge.

Is a roomette worth the extra money?

Often yes on overnight trips, since the fare covers two beds, a private door, and all dining car meals for both passengers. Against coach plus hotel and restaurant meals, the gap narrows. Roomettes are small, though, and share hallway bathrooms.

How far ahead should I book?

Sleeper accommodations price like airline seats and climb steadily as departure nears, so book several months out for peak summer and fall travel. Coach fares stay more stable. Popular routes through Glacier and the Rockies sell their limited sleeper inventory earliest.

What’s the best short Amtrak trip on the East Coast?

The Adirondack from New York to Montreal, following the Hudson River and Lake Champlain. For a shorter run, the Downeaster from Boston to Brunswick, Maine, delivers coastal New England without an overnight commitment or a long-distance schedule risk.

Can you take a train to a national park?

Yes. The Empire Builder stops at East Glacier Park and West Glacier along the southern boundary of Glacier National Park, making it the most direct national park access in the network. The Cardinal passes through the New River Gorge in West Virginia.

Is the Floridian permanent?

No. It was created in November 2024 by merging the Capitol Limited and Silver Star during the East River Tunnel rehabilitation in New York. Those two services are expected to resume separately once the project finishes, currently projected for 2027.

Book the Train, Not the Arrival Time

The best Amtrak routes aren’t the ones with the prettiest photos. They’re the ones matched to how much slack your schedule has. Pick your route based on what happens after you get off. If nothing is scheduled, take the Coast Starlight or the Empire Builder and let the delays be part of it.

If something is scheduled, take a corridor train, fly, or build in a spare day. The scenery on these routes lives up to every claim made for it. The punctuality is worse than almost anyone admits, and planning around both is what separates a trip people rave about from one they complain about for years.
